Whether you’re a newcomer eager to learn or an experienced practitioner looking to refine your knowledge, this guide will clarify key concepts. These definitions and acronyms will enhance your understanding and help you navigate the complexities of Category Management with confidence.

  1. Lifecycle Management (LCM): The management of a product throughout its entire lifecycle, from introduction to decline. 
  2. Linear Space: The measurement of how many inches of shelf space a product/category/manufacturer has within a planogram. 
  3. Live Image Planogram: A digitized image of the product packaging is shown on the planogram. This helps users to visualize the layout more easily and aids replenishment in store. 
  4. Macro Space: References store floorplan space and can mean either department level space or category level space allocation. 
  5. Major Reset: A reset of the shelves that is more involved and requires significant time. 
  6. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP): The recommended selling price by the manufacturer, serving as a reference point for retailers in pricing decisions. 
  7. Market Coverage: A measurement of range covers the percentage in either value or volume terms that a given retailer’s range covers within a market or sub-sector.  
  8. Merchandise Hierarchy (MC): A hierarchical structure that classifies and organizes merchandise categories and subcategories. 
  9. Merchandising: The planning of space at a micro level and physical layout of product within a specific category or gondola. 
  10. Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ): The minimum quantity suppliers require retailers to purchase for an order, ensuring production efficiency. Important for inventory management and budget planning by category managers. 
  11. Mirror: Change POG from Left to Right to Right to Left. 
  12. MissionControl (MC): A Cantactix automation application that operates in conjunction with Blue Yonder Space and Floor Planning, improving the planogramming process from start to finish. 
  13. Modular: The term Walmart uses to describe a planogram. 
  14. Module Bay: A specific length of space occupied by shelving or equivalent e.g. chiller cabinets. The actual length may vary by store. 
  15. National Purchase Diary (NPD): Measures how consumers shop across all channels, sourcing data from both retailers and consumers to quantify sales, share, distribution, and velocity.  
  16. Need State: An attribute of a product identified as a primary driver for product selection. 
  17. Nesting: Term used for products or display trays that rest partially inside each other when they are stocked on a shelf. 
  18. Nielsen IQ (NIQ): A leading provider of market research, consumer insights, and data analytics, spun off from The Nielsen Company in 2021. 
  19. Object Hierarchy: To keep track of how objects relate to each other in a Blue Yonder Space Planning planogram, they are organized into a hierarchy. Learn more here.  
  20. Object Level Access Rules (OLAR): Rules that define and control access to specific objects or data within a system. 
  21. Online Grocery Pickup (OGP): A service offered by retailers allowing customers to order groceries online and pick them up at a designated location. 
  22. Object Mapping Document (OMD): A document that defines the mapping between different data objects or entities within a system. 
  23. Open Access (AO): Accessibility to data or systems without restrictions or limitations. 
  24. Operating System (OS): Software that manages computer hardware and provides services for computer programs. 
  25. Orientation: The side of a product that normally faces the shopper when the product is positioned on the shelf.
