At Cantactix, my focus is on helping the Walmart Category community draw better planograms with greater efficiency. When meeting with supplier teams, their Category Managers often ask me why they need MissionControl, since some of the functions seem similar to what is available in Space Planning. MissionControl provides the ability to work faster, has more functionality, and automates many features that would otherwise have to be done manually in Space Planning. It also has all-new features, not available in Space Planning at all. Here are 10 of my favorite MissionControl features, and how they help the community get their planograms completed faster and more consistently.

Top 10 MissionControl Features:

In my career, I have been a Category Advisor at several major companies for Walmart. The list of functions below came from years of working with Walmart buyers. The feature list below is what I find most valuable for Walmart Advisors. 

  1. Batch Editor allows you to create batches of planograms to work with in MissionControl. These batches can then be used by various other MissionControl features such as Automator, Table Exporter, Update or Clear Fields, Data Importer, and more. This enables mass updates to your planograms. 
  2. Automator allows automation of a number of common changes required during the planogram process, such as: 
  • Swapping of ‘like for like’ products into planograms 
  • Mass product Adds, Deletes, and Inserts to the right or left of a user determined anchor product and also place those items on Add/ Delete Shelves 
  • Transfer of unit movement from one product to another 
  • Can populate the Assortment action (Performance) field if desired to see assortment changes in the planogram 
  1. Data Importer allows importing text or Excel data into a project. The functionality is similar to Space Planning’s Import Products from Text feature, but with these additional enhancements: 
  • Excel format files can be directly imported from 
  • Multiple fields can be matched against, versus only a single key field in Space Planning 
  • Any object’s fields can be updated or matched on, not just Product and Performance fields 
  • Any number of planograms and projects can be processed in a single pass 
  • Missing drawings and fixtures can also be created 
  1. Find Anything allows you to search for any selectable object in any open project. Enhancements over Space Planning’s normal Find Product feature include: 
  • Finding anything selectable—Space Planning just finds Positions. With MissionControl, drawings, fixtures, and even segments and planograms can be found 
  • Searches can be done within an existing selection to narrow your scope, such as finding Positions within a selected Segment 
  • Selections can be added to. Find all positions of Brand A, then easily add Brand B to the selection 
  1. Repopulator Allows merging products and performance-related metrics from older versions of planograms. This can make creating reports comparing pre/post performance and changes easier by condensing the data into a single set of planograms. Repopulator works by bringing in products and performance data from old planogram files and merging it into the new planogram files.  
  1. Tile helps users review planograms efficiently by displaying customizable information required to validate the efficiency of a planogram. It’s often used with Buyers and Vendors during the annual review cycle.
  • Tile floats a new window that contains the specific information you care about in tiles in front of Space Planning and updates itself in response to changes you make to the active planogram
  1. Interactive Highlight and Cleanup enhances highlighting and data cleansing in Space Planning.  Enhancements over Space Planning’s normal Highlight feature include:  
  • Highlight option changes are applied immediately. No more going to the properties screen to tinker and having to press OK to see the results
  • An enhanced legend for group highlights: Clicking on a legend entry instantly selects all items that match
  • Drag-n-drop clean-up: Selecting one or more legend entries and dragging them onto another legend entry replaces all the values of the field you dragged with the ones you dragged onto. Cleaning data issues is simple with Interactive Highlight and Cleanup         
  1. Add Positions to Fixtures creates positions on a planogram by matching performance-level metrics with fixture attributes. Some examples include:  
  • Apply Filter on performances allows users to input a formula that can determine if an item is included on the planogram or not.  
  • Sort Positions on a shelf by performance, brand, size, or other attributes 
  1. Table Exporter allows you to quickly extract data from one or more project files in Space Planning. Data is extracted as text to comma-delimited format (CSV), which can be used in Microsoft Excel, Access, and many other applications. The functionality is similar to the Export Table/Export Table to Excel features in Space Planning, but with these additional enhancements: 
  1. Sort Fixture Positions allows you to sort Positions in the planogram using Product or Performance attributes. This is a simple 3-step process of selecting which planogram(s) to sort, which fixture(s), then how to perform the sort. I see it used often on floating shelves.

  1. DC Matrix allows you to run a DC Matrix, a commonly requested but tricky to create Walmart report. Cantactix MissionControl’s version of the Walmart DC Matrix report supports the following features: 
  • Viewing current state of store count by DC and item 
  • Viewing future state of store count by DC and item 
  • Calculation of change in store count by DC and item 
  • Highlights and a separate breakout worksheet of critical mass issues (items which are being supplied to fewer than 10 stores at a DC) by DC and item 
  • Scenarios where multiple DCs can supply a single store (e.g. a DC for high velocity items and a separate DC for slower movers)
  • Setting alternative UPCs to use based on the DC the item is being sourced from 
  1. Field Name Override allows you to change the default field names for some or all of the fields in Space Planning. This can be handy when your responsibilities cover multiple contexts where fields are given custom names (e.g., Planogram Generator tag fields having different meanings depending on the category, or Description fields having customized names in different categories or at different retailers). Changing field names manually in Space Planning can be a difficult process, but this feature makes it easy.
  1. Add Floating Shelves compares two sets of modulars and creates the floating shelves that Walmart requires, populated with the correct products. The floating shelf types that we have automated include: 
  • Add  
  • Delete 
  • Consideration  
  • Cutdown  
  • Delta
  1. Edit Checks allows running a series of Edit Checks across multiple modulars. The checks cover most of Walmart’s standards for modular submission, which are extensive.
  1. Ready for Submission performs many common cleanup tasks to modulars to make them ready for submission to Walmart. A big time-saver, right when you’re pressed for time to get your modulars submitted.
